My Approach & Philosophy

Ever gone through something so unreal and traumatic that you thought to yourself, “How the hell will I ever put this into words? How will I ever get the help that I need if I can’t find the words to express my darkest experiences, thoughts, and emotions?” Do you struggle to seek help and feel like a therapist may not understand your experience? Since a young age, that has been my struggle. As the child of Hispanic immigrants and someone who was drawn to art rather than the more “normal” school subjects, I felt immediately different than everyone around me. I eventually found my identity in art and used it to express myself and escape the hardships of this world. While in college, I learned about art therapy, and I knew intuitively that this was the way I could help others who have lived dark and painful experiences. In my post-graduate program, I learned about the ways in which art therapy benefits our healing journeys.

Art therapy is for when you find that words aren’t enough to express that pain. It’s for when we emerge from a traumatic experience and find that words would only retraumatize us. It’s for processing the good, the bad, and the ugly.

The beauty of art therapy is that you do NOT need to be an artist to be “good” at it. Each session looks different from person to person. Each session comes with different healing experiences. With my training as an art therapist, I will help guide you through art directives that will help you process difficult experiences and emotions but also help you explore who you want to be, where you want to be, and the life you wish to create. Our sessions will also explore self-love, self-care, and ways to increase your self-confidence so that when those bad days come (because they will) you will have the strength to rise when you feel like you’ve been knocked down.

As an artist, I am drawn to collage, mixed-media, and clay works. I love to upcycle and reuse old magazines, fabrics, and found objects (seashells, beads, feathers, etc.). When it comes to life outside of the art therapy world, you’ll mostly find me spending time with my loved ones including my cat, Luna, and puppy, Sunny.
