    The Journey: Owning the “In-Between”

I’ve always moved a little differently. Growing up as a queer biracial kid who loved anime and gaming, I frequently navigated the pressure of being “too different.” I know the exhaustion of code-switching, especially when I was told I was “talking white” for showing intelligence or told I didn’t fit the vibe of what people expected. My path to becoming a therapist was personal. After being empowered by my own journey in the therapy chair, I realized that my eccentricities weren’t flaws: they were my greatest strengths.

My path into this field was also shaped by a front-row seat to the complexities of substance use and mental health. I’ve seen firsthand how these challenges aren’t just individual struggles. Instead, they are systemic ripples that impact families, friendships, and communities. That lived experience is why I’m so passionate about helping people break cycles, no matter how long those cycles have been spinning.

    Together: A Partnership of Equals

You won’t find a “stuffy” therapist here. I bring a bubbly, relaxed energy to our sessions because I want you to feel comfortable enough to be yourself. I don’t view you as something to be “fixed.” Instead, I’m here to guide you toward a place where you feel confident and self-sustaining.

I’ll always be direct with you when you need a push, but I also keep the big picture in mind. This is especially true when we are working through trauma. I understand that the weight you’re carrying isn’t just in your head; it’s often a natural response to navigating a society, a culture, or past experiences that weren’t always built with your safety in mind. In our sessions, you don’t have to “perform.” I am a firm believer that being different is okay and being eccentric is part of being human. Also, let’s be real: life is messy. In this space, you can take the mask off. If you need to cuss and vent to drop the professional act to say how you actually feel, then do it.

    Specialized Support for the “Outsiders”

I utilize Narrative Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and an Affirmative lens to support:

Trauma & Resilience: Processing past experiences to help you feel safe and grounded in the present.

BIPOC & LGBTQIA+ Identities: Navigating systemic pressure while staying true to your authentic self.

Neurodivergence: Creating a world that works for your brain, not against it.

Juvenile Justice & Substance Use History: Supporting those navigating “the system” or family cycles with dignity and a clean slate.

Anxiety, Depression, & Life Transitions: Moving past the “stuck” feeling and into a place of active, committed living.

The Person Out of the Office

When I’m not in the therapist chair, I’m leaning into my own eccentricities. I’m a proud Cat Dad, a gamer, an occasional enjoyer of the gym, and a music lover. I often share a quote from the video game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 that guides my philosophy:

“You know, hobbies don’t always have to be useful. I’m enjoying the uselessness of today, and readying my usefulness for tomorrow.”

I believe your value isn’t tied to your productivity. Sometimes, the most healing thing you can do is lean into the “useless” things you love to recharge for the work of tomorrow. You don’t have to be productive 24/7 to be worthy of love or respect. You don’t have to be “useful” to be enough. You’re enough right now, in this exact moment.

    Your Path, Your Terms

You deserve a space where you don’t have to constantly explain your culture, your beliefs, your hobbies, or your history. You just have to show up. Whether you are dealing with the echoes of the past or the anxieties of the future, let’s work together to make sure you’re the one holding the controller.

As a Psych NP in the Lake Norman area, I can’t say enough good things about this practice. I often send my Asheville clients their way. Time and again my clients share how comfortable they felt and how well-matched they were with their therapist.

I was told I would get a meet and great call. I was sent a text with the therapist information/ number they’d be contacting me from. Definitely a little disappointed that I had to wait a month for this meet and greet phone call. When the date came… nothing- no call or text or email. Still haven’t received any response.

Jennifer Garrett may be one of the most caring, thoughtful and self-less humans I have ever known. She can hold space for you like no other. In that space, you feel safe, heard and supported. I recommend Jennifer and the many other therapists of Resilient Mind Counseling.

How Do I Discover What My Insurance Will Cover?

To find out what your insurance may cover, contact your insurance and ask if you have out-of-network mental health coverage.

You may also want to mention the type of license that I have to ensure services with my type of credential are covered.

Other things you may want to ask about are:

    • What your deductible is
    • What your co-insurance payment will be
    • How many visits you get per year
    • If you need authorization for your visits
    • Details on how to submit a superbill

Contact me if you would like more guidance on how to figure out what your insurance will cover.

Every client will receive a Good Faith Estimate. The Good Faith Estimate shows the costs of items and services that are reasonably expected for your health care needs for an item or service. The estimate is based on information known at the time the estimate was created. The Good Faith Estimate does not include any unknown or unexpected costs that may arise during treatment. You could be charged more if complications or special circumstances occur. If this happens, federal law allows you to dispute (appeal) the bill.

The Good Faith Estimate is not a contract and therefore does not require you to obtain the items or services provided by Resilient Mind Counseling PLLC. The foundation of a good therapeutic relationship between a client and therapist is the client’s right to autonomy and self-determination. Therefore, you (as the client) have the right to terminate services at any time.

If you are billed for more than the Good Faith Estimate, you have the right to dispute the bill.

You may contact the health care provider or facility listed to let them know the billed charges are higher than the Good Faith Estimate. You can ask them to update the bill to match the Good Faith Estimate, ask to negotiate the bill, or ask if there is financial assistance available.

You may also start a dispute resolution process with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). If you choose to use the dispute resolution process, you must start the dispute process within 120 calendar days (about 4 months) of the date on the original bill.

There is a $25 fee to use the dispute process. If the agency reviewing your dispute agrees with you, you will have to pay the price on the Good Faith Estimate. If the agency disagrees with you and agrees with the health care provider or facility, you will have to pay the higher amount.

To learn more about disputes and get a form to start the process, go to www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 1-800-985-3059.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate or the dispute process, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 1-800-985-3059.

We can provide a monthly superbill that you may submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement.

To cancel a scheduled Counseling session, a minimum of 24 hours in advance of your session is required. If prior and timely notification is not given, you will be charged the full session fee for the missed session.
