Trauma comes in all shapes and sizes, and it is sometimes hard to understand the different types of trauma. We work with people who struggle with trauma but don’t know that they’ve experienced it until we discuss their stories in more detail.
Trauma therapy helps us not only understand how to manage symptoms but also regain control of a life that can feel unmanageable.
Therapy for trauma is about resilience factors and nervous system regulation. Trauma gets stored in the body so we cannot “outthink it.” We may be able to rationally understand what’s going on, but without doing the somatic or body-based work, it can be hard to shake.
Types of Trauma:
Acute Trauma
Acute trauma is the easiest to identify. This type of trauma could be related to an earthquake, tsunami, global pandemic, sexual or physical assault, etc. These are clear, obvious, and very impactful. We know it can be hard to remember, but these are not within your control and not your fault.
Chronic Trauma
Chronic trauma can be defined as ongoing trauma over a prolonged period of time. War or combat abuse, ongoing sexual or physical abuse, and living in a domestically violent home are examples of trauma that is experienced for a longer amount of time.
Complex Childhood Trauma
Complex childhood trauma can be especially damaging. This includes all forms of child abuse, neglect, adverse childhood experiences, community violence – domestic and family violence, civil unrest, war trauma or genocide, cultural dislocation, sexual exploitation, and trafficking.
