Trauma can feel like hell, and sometimes it can feel like you’ll never be able to overcome your trauma. You’re constantly feeling like you’re in fight, flight, or freeze mode, fearful and disconnected. It can come up as feeling like you’re outside your body, feeling numb, and feeling unsafe and alone.
You may be having nightmares, always scanning for danger, or reaching for substances to help numb out the pain.
We know how scary trauma can be. We also know that it’s not your fault, even when you feel guilty or ashamed about what’s happened to you.
You are not alone in this. Lots of people struggle with trauma, and how could you not? The world can feel like an overwhelming, scary place, and it’s hard to feel safe.
If you’re struggling with trauma, therapy for trauma can help. We can work on mindfulness and grounding techniques to help you regulate your nervous system and take back control so that life feels more manageable.
Trauma does not have to dictate how you live your life, and therapy can help you manage your symptoms. Please do not hesitate to reach out for support to overcome your trauma. At Resilient Mind Counseling, we all specialize in working with trauma and helping you regain control.
One technique that is very useful when things feel overwhelming is to sit somewhere comfortable with your feet on the floor and do the following:
Take 4-5 really slow, deep breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth.
Look around the room and do this:
- Name 5 things that you can see.
- Name 4 things you can feel/touch.
- Name 3 things you can hear.
- Name 2 things you can smell.
- Name 1 thing you can taste.
